Meet the Face Behind GuYDanS Consulting & Bookkeeping
Hi! I’m Shaune Allen, proud owner of GuYDanS Consulting & Bookkeeping.
I look forward to sharing my story and I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
I’ve been in the bookkeeping service since 1989, when the twenty-four-column book was the only way to record income and expenses. Bookkeeping was simply a hobby for me in these pre-QuickBooks days—until my husband and I moved from Toronto to Edmonton to purchase a franchise in the early 1990s.
Running this new franchise didn’t go according to plan. We ended up losing quite a bit of money, but we learned some valuable lessons and discovered some of our strengths in the process—one of which was my flair and passion for bookkeeping.
After deciding to leave the franchise behind in 1997, I pursued a career in bookkeeping first as an employee, then as a self-employed contractor three years later. One thing I enjoyed most about working with the various small businesses I served was giving business owners peace of mind. They could look at their in-house financials and know that they correctly reflected what was happening in their business. As my education and experience increased, my fervor for facilitating cashflow has increased as well.
My goal is to help even more small-business owners manage their finances so they can feel empowered to pro-actively run their businesses with accurate, current data. Moving from being a contractor to growing a company was an important step in achieving this vision. A more recent motivator has also been to help supplement the income of my husband, who has been on long-term disability from his software development career since 2015.
As of February 2018, I’m happy to say that I’m no longer a “one-woman show.” Our son, Dan, joined me and we have recently hired a part-time employee who graduated from the Accounts Payable and Payroll program at one of our local business colleges. We’re also becoming more and more paperless by using the Hubdoc document fetching software as well as using QuickBooks Online Cloud accounting software.
I believe that a successful business is based on relationships, which is why we strive to treat clients, staff, and vendors with honour and respect. We also pride ourselves in listening to clients to discover their needs so we can serve them effectively.
Accuracy and efficiency in our work help us reach our goal of clients having current data that they can trust. I also believe in having the trust of our clients as we practice with honesty and integrity. We do not blame someone else for a mistake but always own up to it and try to make it right. All of these values help us provide top-quality services to our clients.
Moreover, education and training are essential to GuYDanS Bookkeeping. We are always learning whether by webinars, seminars, online or in-person courses or conferences. As a Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB), the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers of Canada requires me to take 20 hours of education each year to maintain my designation. My son and employee will soon start the process of becoming a CPB as well.
I love helping my clients read their financials and understand where their money is being spent. I also enjoy helping them save time and money by going paperless or using direct deposit to pay their employees or switching to cloud accounting to get more current data for business decisions. I feel honoured when clients say that I’m a “stress-reliever,” because that’s exactly what they hired me to do: handle the accounting, payroll, and paperwork so they can do what they do best.
When I’m not helping people with their bookkeeping or accounting, I try to improve myself. I used to like to sit quietly for an hour or two and read a good book, but as there’s no time for that right now, my husband introduced me to the wonderful world of audiobooks.
One of the joys throughout our marriage of nearly 38 years has been mentoring struggling couples. We’ve had to stop regular mentorship since my husband became ill, but I still try to encourage couples when the opportunity arises.
Singing is another passion of mine, particularly when I get the chance to help create beautiful harmonies as part of a trio or quartet. Sometimes my daughter and I sing together as she plays the piano and I play the guitar.
I also enjoy walking around our neighborhood and hiking. I enjoy the beauty of flowers, trees, and shrubs. I could stay forever in the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia. It’s just amazing!
Thank you for reading about me, what matters to me, and how my values influence the way I do business.
